Chapter Sixteen

After Twerp helped her replicate a dress for her upcoming date, they went for a walk to pass the time before dinner. Rashana could barely focus on the AI’s chatter, however, her mind full of nothing but Mek. In all her years confined in the lab, Rashana never dreamed she might have a lover, let alone someone like him. She’d been thinking about what he’d told her about resonance and the mating bond. As complicated and involved as it sounded, it also explained why she felt so drawn to him. Why she yearned for his touch.

Her cheeks heated as she thought about his hand in her pants. She wanted to do it again. That, and more. Without a doubt, this was more than just attraction between them—it was something deeper. She already felt closer to him than she’d ever felt to anyone. She was dying to take the next step and explore what this resonance meant.

Dinnertime rolled around, and Twerp escorted her to the mess hall where she found Mek already seated among several other members of the crew. He smiled and indicated the spot next to him. The suppression treatment she’d received had already worn off, but she was pleased she was able to maintain a wall between herself and the emotions drifting around the room. Perhaps she could learn to be normal all on her own.

Emmy sat at the far end of the table and caught her eye. She gave Rashana an encouraging smile. Although Rashana had promised herself she wouldn’t use her powers, she opened her senses just enough to verify Emmy’s smile was genuine. A slight twinge of longing was mixed with warmth and well-wishes.

Rashana’s legs went weak with relief. She hadn’t even realized how much she was worried. Smiling back, she then turned and sat next to Mek.

He looked at her closely. “Everything okay? Is the crowd too oppressive?”

A spike of worry tightened her throat. Had he sensed her using her power? Looking him straight in the eye, she shook her head. “You worry too much.”

He shrugged. “My sister used to ignore the pain until it overwhelmed her. Then it was really hard to get back under control. It’s best to keep on top of it.”

Rashana squeezed his hand in gratitude. It was wonderful having someone who cared so much. “Thank you.”

After dinner, a bunch of the crew gathered on the observation deck for a movie. Rashana leaned close to Mek and whispered, “Do we have to go?”

He put a hand on the back of her neck and rubbed gently. “Of course not. How about another walk in the garden?”

“That sounds wonderful.”

They walked hand-in-hand down the corridors and stepped into the lush, humid atmosphere of the garden. Unlike her dizzying experience on the observation deck, the openness of the air between the plants was refreshing. What would it feel like to walk under a real sky on Oruq Nine? She could hardly wait until tomorrow.

As they meandered along the paths between the many leaves and flowers, it felt like they had an entire world to themselves.
